Consultation sessions generally last between 40 and 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the questions.

Introduction
Qi Men Dun Jia (QMDJ) has been practiced for centuries as one of the most sophisticated systems of strategic observation in traditional Eastern thought. Throughout its long history, numerous schools, chart-construction methods, and interpretive traditions have developed.
As a result, two Qimen practitioners may analyze the same question using different chart-construction methods and reach different conclusions. This often leads beginners to wonder why such differences exist and which approach should be regarded as more reliable.
Through many years of practical consultation, research, and observation, I have found that the accuracy of Qimen analysis depends not only on the practitioner’s experience, but also on the accuracy of the chart itself. Even a highly skilled practitioner may reach incomplete conclusions if the chart is constructed from incorrect or insufficient information.
For this reason, I believe that every serious Qimen consultation should begin with a proper understanding of several fundamental principles before any interpretation is attempted.
This article summarizes the practical principles that I have adopted through decades of personal study and real-world consultation experience.
Although different schools may apply different methods, the following principles represent the standards that I personally follow in my own practice.
Chapter 1
The Importance of Accurate Chart Construction
Every Qimen analysis begins with the construction of the Qimen chart.
The quality of the final interpretation depends first upon the quality of the chart itself.
If the foundation is inaccurate, even excellent analytical skills cannot completely compensate for errors introduced at the beginning of the process.
For this reason, chart construction should never be treated as a routine technical procedure.
Instead, it should be regarded as the first and most critical stage of strategic analysis.
In my experience, many inaccurate online Qimen interpretations are not caused by weaknesses in the theory of Qi Men Dun Jia itself. Rather, they result from incomplete information, incorrect chart construction, or the inappropriate selection of chart-construction methods.
Before interpreting any chart, several fundamental questions should first be answered:
- Which chart-construction method is being used?
- How was the consultation initiated?
- Which time system is being applied?
- Is the chart based on Local True Solar Time or another method?
- Has sufficient information been provided to establish an accurate analytical foundation?
Only after these questions have been clarified should interpretation begin.
Accurate chart construction does not guarantee perfect prediction.
However, inaccurate chart construction greatly reduces the reliability of every subsequent analysis.
For this reason, I place great importance on establishing an accurate foundation before attempting to evaluate any strategic question.
Chapter 2
Two Fundamental Approaches to Qimen Consultation
In my own practice, Qimen consultations generally begin through one of two approaches.
Although both methods are rooted in the principles of Qi Men Dun Jia, they are applied under different circumstances and should not be confused.
The first approach is based on Local True Solar Time.
The second approach is based on what I refer to as Casual Time.
Each method has its own principles, strengths, and appropriate applications.
Understanding the difference between these two approaches is essential for anyone seeking an accurate consultation.
The choice of chart-construction method directly influences the analytical framework upon which the entire consultation is built.
Consequently, before any interpretation begins, it is important to determine which approach best corresponds to the actual circumstances of the consultation.

Why Accurate Information Matters
Qi Men Dun Jia (QMDJ) is a traditional Chinese strategic system that studies the interaction of time, space, environment, and human activity.
The quality of any consultation depends not only on the analytical method used, but also on the accuracy of the information provided.
For this reason, American Ci Bei Temple encourages all consultation requests to include complete and accurate information whenever possible.
The purpose is not to collect unnecessary personal data, but to establish the most appropriate analytical foundation for meaningful strategic insight.
Two Different Approaches to Qimen Dunjia Consultation
Throughout history, experienced QMDJ practitioners have generally worked with two different approaches.
Neither approach is inherently superior.
Each serves different situations.
1. Local True Solar Time Method
This is the classical method most commonly recorded in traditional Qimen literature.
The chart is calculated according to the querent’s actual geographical location using Local True Solar Time rather than simply using a standard time zone.
Because the Earth rotates continuously, two cities using the same official clock time may actually experience significantly different solar time.
For example:
Two people may both consult at 12:00 PM Beijing Time.
One is located in Harbin.
The other is located in Urumqi.
Although the clock shows the same time, the actual solar time differs by several hours.
Traditional QMDJ recognizes this difference because local solar conditions form part of the spatial-temporal environment being analyzed.
For this reason, providing your current location is important when this method is used.
Why We Request Your Current Location
When consultations are based upon Local True Solar Time, your current location allows the chart to be calculated more accurately.
This does not mean the Temple tracks your location.
We simply need to know where you are when the consultation begins.
For example:
Brooklyn, New York, USA
or
London, United Kingdom
This information helps establish the appropriate time-space reference for analysis.
2. Situational Correspondence Method
Another traditional approach does not depend entirely upon clock time.
Instead, the practitioner determines the chart according to meaningful circumstances occurring during the consultation.
Examples may include:
- a number selected by the client
- a written phrase
- a spoken sentence
- body orientation
- voice
- immediate environmental conditions
- other meaningful correspondences recognized by the practitioner
This approach has long been used in traditional face-to-face consultations.
It allows the practitioner to incorporate immediate situational factors rather than relying solely on chronological time.
Experienced practitioners sometimes employ this method when multiple consultations occur simultaneously or when situational correspondences provide clearer analytical indicators.
Different Chart Construction Methods
Another important point often overlooked by beginners is that there is not only one way to construct a Qi Men Dun Jia chart.
Over many centuries, multiple chart construction systems have developed.
Examples include:
- Zhi Run Method (置闰法)
- Chai Bu Method (拆补法)
- Mao Shan Method
- Yin Method
Different construction methods may produce different chart configurations and therefore different interpretations.
For this reason, discussions comparing QMDJ analyses should always identify which chart construction method has been used.

QMDJ does not function as a general fortune-telling system.

“Is this an appropriate time to start my business?"
“How should I approach this partnership?"
