American Ci Bei Temple: A Sanctuary of Wisdom and Compassion
Temple Overview
Established in New York City on June 30, 2024, American Ci Bei Temple is a Buddhist Zen organization under the spiritual mentorship of Venerable Master Hongyuna Shi (Master Yi-Yun). As the temple’s abbot and guiding mentor, Master Hongyuna Shi provides leadership to the four-fold assembly of disciples, upholding the path of Mahayana Buddhism. He emphasizes the unity of Zen and Pure Land traditions, guiding practitioners to achieve spiritual liberation and nurture community well-being.
The temple honors the Three Holy Beings of the Saha World—Shakyamuni Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva—alongside the Three Holy Beings of the Western Pure Land: Amitabha Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. These revered figures serve as guiding lights for all sentient beings on the path to enlightenment.
Our mission is to spread the Dharma, transcend ignorance, enlighten society, and benefit all sentient beings. Through the principles of Mahayana Buddhism, we guide individuals to overcome delusions, cultivate wisdom, and attain spiritual growth, ultimately leading them toward liberation and peace.
Our Path of Practice and Service
Nurturing Wisdom and Faith
We host regular meditation retreats, Pure Land practice sessions, and Dharma lectures to deepen understanding of core Buddhist teachings. Through digital outreach and publications, we disseminate the wisdom of the Dharma to inspire broader engagement with Mahayana Buddhism.
Strategic Meta-science: Life Navigation & Spiritual Guidance
We offer a unique navigation system developed by the temple, rooted in the tradition of 以術載道 (Using Skill as a Vessel for the Way). As a form of Upaya (skillful means), this system utilizes ancient wisdom—such as the Guanyin Oracle and Qimen Dunjia—to bridge profound Dharma teachings with practical guidance for modern life. Guided personally by Master Hongyuna Shi, these sessions manifest Dharma principles in daily decision-making, helping practitioners resolve life’s challenges and cultivate deeper wisdom.
- Dedicated Support: This service is offered as a privilege to those who support the temple’s mission. We operate on a Dana (voluntary offering) basis, based entirely on personal generosity.
- Core Sangha & Practitioners: For those who regularly participate in our communal practice, Master Hongyuna Shi offers spiritual guidance on life’s critical decisions to assist you on your cultivation path.
- Annual Sustaining Members: For those whose ongoing support sustains our daily operations, we offer in-depth “Strategic Meta-science" consultations during major life transitions, striving to provide the wisdom necessary to find balance across career, family, and spiritual practice.
Zen Arts and Cultural Heritage
Through our Zen Art Center, we provide workshops on Zen calligraphy and ink painting, celebrating Eastern philosophy and mindful living. These arts serve as a gateway to inner peace and the preservation of compassion-based cultural traditions.
Compassionate Community Outreach
We serve our community through compassionate deeds and Dharma services. Our outreach includes prayer and blessing ceremonies, end-of-life spiritual support, support chanting for the deceased, as well as the provision of memorial and blessing tablets for the faithful.
Beyond these spiritual services, we are deeply committed to supporting vulnerable populations. We provide guidance to help individuals foster positive changes in their lives, truly embodying the Buddhist spirit of compassionate service to all beings.
Our Aspirations
- Fostering Community: To deepen our roots in New York and enhance the presence of the Dharma in our local neighborhood.
- Nurturing Practitioners: To cultivate a thriving Sangha through both online and offline practice, supporting dedicated students on their spiritual journey.
- Spiritual Legacy: To establish the temple as a beacon of light, preserving these ancient traditions for generations to come.
The Temple’s Slogan: “Spreading the Dharma, Dispelling Ignorance, and Liberating All—With Great Compassion.”

Venerable Master HONGYUNA SHI (泓雲法師)
Visionary Spiritual Mentor | Zen Ink Master | Strategic Meta-science Consultant (Qimen Dunjia)
【Abbot’s Introduction】
Venerable Master HONGYUNA SHI (born Gu Yixiong, courtesy name Lingzi) is a visionary Spiritual Mentor, a distinguished Zen Ink Master, and a high-level practitioner of Qimen Dunjia (Ancient Chinese Strategic Meta-science). Currently serving as the Abbot of the American Ci Bei Temple and the Chief Strategic Meta-science Consultant at the New York Qimen Feng Shui Academy, he is widely recognized as a Zen master and an expert in metaphysical divination. Venerable Master Hongyuna Shi possesses profound experience and extraordinary mastery in the practical application of Qimen Dunjia and metaphysical arts.
His spiritual identity is intricately woven through a series of profound Dharma names, each marking a different stage of his soul’s evolution and his quest to uncover the essence of life: His Precept name, Yiyun (One Cloud), symbolizes a singular path of unsullied purity. His honorific name, Lingyun (Loong Spirit and Divine Thunder in the Clouds), evokes the image of a celestial dragon bridging the spiritual realms. Furthermore, his master-bestowed names—Cigu (Compassionate Ancient), representing a primordial compassion, and Yinzheng (Seal of Realization), signifying the attainment of awakening—reflect his deep perception of the spiritual self at various milestones of his cultivation.
Known by the poetic epithets “Half-Monk of the Sangha” and “Ancient Ling of the Celestial Court,” Master Hongyuna Shi conducts his creative and spiritual work from his studio, the Lingmiao Hermitage. Through his mastery of meta-science and the arts, he continues to perceive the intricate balance between the past and the future, guiding others toward spiritual awakening.
Born in Binzhou, China, in 1971, Master Hongyuna Shi graduated from the Art Department of Xi’an United University in 1995. He has held prestigious leadership roles, including President of the World Zen Art Research Institute and Vice President of the China Zen Art Academy (HK).
His spiritual journey began in his hometown, leading to his formal refuge in 1998 at the historic Great Ci’en Temple in Xi’an, marking the start of decades of integration between Chan Buddhist practice and the arts. Following his move to the United States, his path deepened in New York under the guidance of Elder Miao-Feng at Cihang Jingshe, where he studied the Avalokitesvara (Guan Yin) Dharma. Subsequently, a sacred pilgrimage across China’s revered sites and a transformative spiritual awakening propelled his mission to new heights.
In March 2021, he was appointed as the inaugural Zen Hall Supervisor of the American Tianfo Temple by the International Zen Buddhism Association (USA). In January 2023, he underwent the tonsure ceremony at the American Tianfo Temple to formally enter the monastic order, receiving the precept name “Yiyun" (One Cloud). At this pivotal moment, he pledged to dedicate his life to the Right Dharma and the spiritual awakening of society. In September 2023, he became a lineage disciple of Dharma Master Tianpei, inheriting the mantle and receiving the Dharma name “Yinzheng" (Seal of Realization). Deepening his practice in Pure Land Buddhism, he realized his compassionate vision on June 30, 2024, by founding the American Ci Bei Temple and serving as its inaugural Abbot.
Master Hongyuna Shi is the founder of the “Loongzen” lineage—a unique spiritual path that synthesizes the sudden enlightenment of Chan (Zen), the focused mindfulness of Pure Land, and the profound wisdom of the ancient spirit of “Loong"—traditionally revered in Eastern culture as the benevolent guardian and protector of the Buddha’s teachings. By bridging these sacred traditions with modern American culture, Loongzen has evolved into a distinct and practical approach to Buddhism in America.
This lineage seamlessly incorporates Strategic Meta-science into a modern system of cultivation. Much like a “metaphysical weather forecast,” it offers a highly practical method to balance Buddhist compassion with actionable wisdom, providing a navigation system for daily life. Master Hongyuna Shi advocates the philosophy that: “Life is the ultimate cultivation; Faith is the primordial source of power; Devotion is the gateway to the Way; and Harmony, Universal Love, and Great Compassion are the supreme manifestations of enlightenment.”
Spiritual Offerings & Compassionate Guidance
Master Hongyuna Shi provides a comprehensive range of spiritual support to the New York community, dedicated to alleviating suffering and illuminating the path of wisdom:
- Dharma & Healing: Through Group Chanting, Blessing Ceremonies for obstacle removal, and Zen Art Lectures, seekers are guided to cultivate Great Compassion, accumulate merit, and sow the karmic seeds of a virtuous foundation.
- Spiritual Guidance: Utilizing the Guan Yin Oracle (Divine Guidance) and Life Counseling to help individuals gain a profound understanding of their original Buddha-nature and the innate qualities they bring into this life. Through the Master’s insights, seekers are empowered to overcome confusion and align their choices with wisdom.
- Strategic Consultations: Applying Qimen Dunjia Destiny Mapping (Predictive Analytics), Tai Sui Pacification, and Feng Shui Purification for residential and memorial sites. These sacred arts are used to optimize the trajectory of one’s destiny, achieving harmony by aligning with auspicious energies and averting misfortune.
Beyond providing strategic clarity, Master Hongyuna Shi utilizes his profound metaphysical gifts as a “skillful means” (Upaya) to alleviate the suffering of others. By guiding seekers through their most critical life decisions and transitions, he offers not only practical resolutions but also spiritual awakening. His ultimate mission is to inspire sentient beings to find refuge in the Three Jewels, cultivating a life of devotion, wisdom, and compassionate practice.
He is renowned for resolving life’s hardships, guiding sentient beings toward kindness, and empowering them to transform their destiny and attain enlightenment.
His Great Vow:
“Transcend ignorance to uphold the Right Dharma; inspire society to liberate all sentient beings.”
Master Hongyuna Shi is dedicated to guiding every soul from the shadows of ignorance into the radiance of the Pure Land.
