About

American Ci Bei Temple: A Sanctuary of Wisdom and Compassion

Temple Overview
Established in New York City on June 30, 2024, American Ci Bei Temple is a Buddhist Zen organization under the spiritual mentorship of Venerable Master Hoongyuain Shi (Master Yi-Yun). As the temple’s abbot and guiding mentor, Master Hoongyuain Shi provides leadership to the four-fold assembly of disciples, upholding the path of Mahayana Buddhism. He emphasizes the unity of Zen and Pure Land traditions, guiding practitioners to achieve spiritual liberation and nurture community well-being.

The temple honors the Three Holy Beings of the Saha World—Shakyamuni Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva—alongside the Three Holy Beings of the Western Pure Land: Amitabha Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. These revered figures serve as guiding lights for all sentient beings on the path to enlightenment.

Our mission is to spread the Dharma, transcend ignorance, enlighten society, and benefit all sentient beings. Through the principles of Mahayana Buddhism, we guide individuals to overcome delusions, cultivate wisdom, and attain spiritual growth, ultimately leading them toward liberation and peace.

Our Path of Practice and Service
Nurturing Wisdom and Faith

We host regular meditation retreats, Pure Land practice sessions, and Dharma lectures to deepen understanding of core Buddhist teachings. Through digital outreach and publications, we disseminate the wisdom of the Dharma to inspire broader engagement with Mahayana Buddhism.

Strategic Guidance & Life Navigation
We offer a unique system of strategic guidance and life navigation rooted in the Buddhist principle of Yi Shu Zai Dao (以術載道, “Using Skill as a Vehicle for the Way”). As a form of Upaya (skillful means), this approach draws upon traditional wisdom systems—including the Guanyin Oracle and Qimen Dunjia—to help practitioners better understand timing, circumstances, opportunities, and challenges in life. Rather than predicting the future, these methods are used as tools for reflection, discernment, and spiritual growth. Guided personally by Venerable Master Hoongyuain Shi, these sessions integrate Buddhist wisdom with practical life guidance, helping individuals navigate important transitions, clarify life direction, and cultivate greater awareness, balance, and confidence in their daily lives.

  • Dedicated Support: This guidance is offered as a privilege to those who support the temple’s mission and activities. In keeping with the Buddhist tradition of Dana (generosity), all offerings are voluntary and made according to one’s personal circumstances and sincerity.
  • Core Sangha & Practitioners: For regular participants in our practice community, Master Hoongyuain Shi provides guidance regarding cultivation, life direction, and important personal decisions as part of their spiritual development.
  • Annual Sustaining Members: For those whose ongoing support helps sustain the temple’s operations, we offer more in-depth strategic guidance during significant life transitions, assisting individuals in finding greater harmony among career, family, personal development, and spiritual practice.

Zen Arts and Cultural Heritage
Through our Zen Art Center, we offer workshops in Zen calligraphy and ink painting, celebrating Eastern philosophy and mindful living. These arts serve as a gateway to inner peace and the preservation of compassion-based cultural traditions.

Compassionate Community Outreach
We serve the community through compassionate action and Dharma services. Our outreach includes prayer and blessing ceremonies, end-of-life spiritual care, memorial chanting for the deceased, as well as the offering of memorial and blessing tablets for devotees and supporters.

Beyond these spiritual services, we are deeply committed to supporting vulnerable populations. We provide guidance that encourages positive transformation in life, embodying the Buddhist spirit of compassionate service to all beings.

Our Aspirations

  • Fostering Community: To deepen our roots in New York and strengthen the presence of the Dharma in our local community.
  • Nurturing Practitioners: To cultivate a thriving Sangha through both online and in-person practice, supporting dedicated students on their spiritual path.
  • Spiritual Legacy: To establish the temple as a lasting beacon of wisdom and compassion, preserving these ancient traditions for future generations.

Temple Slogan
“Spreading the Dharma, Dispelling Ignorance, and Liberating All Beings with Great Compassion.”

Venerable Master HOONGYUAIN SHI (泓雲法師)

Spiritual Mentor | Zen Ink Artist | Chief Strategic Advisor
Specializing in Qimen Dunjia Strategic Guidance & Life Navigation

【Abbot’s Introduction】

Venerable Master HOONGYUAIN SHI (born Gu Yixiong, courtesy name Lingzi) is a visionary Spiritual Mentor, a distinguished Zen Ink Artist, and a Chief Strategic Advisor specializing in Qimen Dunjia Strategic Guidance and Life Navigation.

He currently serves as the Abbot of the American Ci Bei Temple and Chief Strategic Advisor to the American Society for Qimen Dunjia, where he offers insight into strategic planning, life direction, timing awareness, and the practical application of Qimen Dunjia within modern life contexts.

In accordance with Buddhist tradition, his surname “Shi” signifies his spiritual lineage from Shakyamuni Buddha. His Dharma name “Hoongyuain” evokes the imagery of a vast and boundless ocean of clouds, symbolizing the profound and ineffable nature of Dharma truth, flowing naturally with the rhythms of the universe.

His spiritual journey is expressed through multiple Dharma names marking different stages of realization. His precept name, Yiyun (One Cloud), represents a path of purity and simplicity. His honorific name, Lingyun (Spirit of the Celestial Cloud Dragon), reflects the harmony between the earthly and spiritual realms. His Dharma name Yinzheng (Seal of Realization) signifies the confirmation of awakened insight. These names collectively represent the unfolding of his spiritual cultivation and realization.

Known poetically as the “Half-Monk of the Sangha” and “Ling of the Celestial Hermitage,” Master Hoongyuain Shi conducts his artistic and spiritual practice from the Lingmiao Hermitage, integrating Zen practice with ink art and contemplative insight.

Born in Binzhou, China in 1971, he graduated from the Art Department of Xi’an United University. He has served in various cultural and educational roles, including leadership positions in Zen art institutions.

His spiritual path began with formal refuge in the Great Ci’en Temple in Xi’an, followed by years of Zen and Pure Land practice across China and the United States. He later deepened his practice under senior Buddhist teachers and received ordination as a monastic practitioner, committing fully to Dharma cultivation and service.

In 2024, he founded the American Ci Bei Temple in New York, establishing a center dedicated to the integration of Buddhist practice, Zen art, and practical life guidance.

Loongzen Lineage

Master Hoongyuain Shi is the founder of the Loongzen lineage, a spiritual path that integrates Chan (Zen) sudden enlightenment, Pure Land mindfulness, and the symbolic wisdom of Loong culture, traditionally regarded in Eastern tradition as a guardian expression of Dharma wisdom.

By integrating Strategic Guidance & Life Navigation Systems, Loongzen offers a practical approach to Buddhist cultivation that bridges spiritual practice with real-life decision-making, timing awareness, and personal transformation.

This system emphasizes harmony between compassion-based cultivation and wisdom-based action, supporting practitioners in navigating life with clarity, awareness, and balance.

Philosophical Teaching

He teaches that:
“Life is the ultimate cultivation; Faith is the primordial source of power; Devotion is the gateway to the Way; and Harmony, Universal Love, and Great Compassion are the highest expressions of spiritual realization.”

Spiritual Offerings & Compassionate Guidance
Master Hoongyuain Shi provides a comprehensive range of spiritual and practical guidance services to the community:

  • Dharma & Healing: Group chanting, blessing ceremonies for obstacle removal, and Zen art lectures, supporting the cultivation of compassion, merit, and spiritual clarity.
  • Spiritual Guidance: Guan Yin Oracle interpretation and life counseling, offering insight into personal nature, karmic tendencies, and paths of self-awareness and transformation.
  • Strategic Guidance & Life Navigation: Qimen Dunjia-based analysis for timing, life transitions, and decision support, including guidance for personal, professional, and environmental alignment.
  • Environmental Harmony Practices: Feng Shui consultation, energy harmonization for residences and memorial spaces, and traditional blessing practices.

Core Teaching Principle

Through skillful means (Upaya), Master Hoongyuain Shi integrates Buddhist wisdom with practical life guidance to support individuals during key transitions, helping them cultivate clarity, resilience, and inner balance.

His guidance emphasizes reflection, discernment, and spiritual growth, rather than prediction or determinism.

Mission Statement

Beyond offering guidance, his mission is to support individuals in discovering inner wisdom, cultivating compassion, and aligning their lives with Dharma principles.

He is widely respected for helping individuals navigate challenges, transform difficulties into insight, and move toward greater clarity, peace, and awakening.

“To transcend ignorance and uphold the Right Dharma, and to guide all sentient beings toward awakening and liberation.”
